With this past weekend came the annual DC FanDome event, where DC reveal details and trailers for upcoming film, tv, and gaming franchises. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was held exclusively online this year; and this meant that DC had to double down on their reveals this year to compensate for fans not being able to attend the event in person.
We had trailers for James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad”, “Wonder Woman 1984”, and… Matt Reeves’,” The Batman”, arguably the one fans wanted to see a reveal for the most. And for the most part, the trailer lived up to extraordinary amount of hype that surrounded it; people are saying it could be, not only the best ever batman film, but one of greatest superhero movies ever made, and they have good reasons to think that. Here’s why…
The cast and team behind it…
If Warner Bros’ are prepared to pump hundreds of millions of dollars into a film, you know that they’re going to make sure to hire some talented people to helm the project. And that definitely applies to The Batman. First of all, let’s talk about the director, Matt Reeves’.
Matt Reeves’ has become a recognised and acclaimed director in recent years after he helmed 2 of the 3 films in the remake of the Planet of The Apes trilogy. He’s also directed “Cloverfield” in 2009, and was an executive producer on both of its subsequent sequels, “10 Cloverfield Lane”, and “The Cloverfield Paradox”. His films generally garner great reviews from critics and fans alike, and bring in a strong box office performance. Hiring Reeves’ to direct and co-write the film was an incredibly wise decision on Warner Bros’ end.
Moving onto the cast…well, its amazing. It’s A list collection of actors includes: Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Barry Keoghan, Jayme Lawson, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. And then playing the caped crusader himself, is Robert Pattinson.
A lot of people were initially sceptical of Pattinson, saying that they weren’t sure he was right for the role, mainly due to the stigma that has surrounded him since his days in the “Twilight” franchise. But in recent years, Pattinson has delivered excellent performances in films such as “The Lighthouse” and “Good Time”, which show he is an actor with a lot of talent and range; and the first trailer for The Batman showed this perfectly.
It’s not part of the DCEU…
It has been 100% confirmed by the writers and producers of the film that The Batman is set outside of the DC Extended Universe, meaning it has no connection to “Justice League”, “Batman Vs Superman”, or any other films set in that universe; this is a completely standalone experience. And that’s amazing! It means that film won’t have to stay within a pre-existing continuity; the film can really be its own thing, which unlocks a lot of unique writing and storytelling potential.
It overcame production troubles…
The Batman had been passed around Hollywood for years before finally landing in the hands of Matt Reeves. Various actors and directors joined and then dropped out of the project over the years. For many films, development hell is practically a death sentence, and the film never gets to see the light of day. And that’s why The Batman is likely going to be amazing; it managed to climb out of that pit that many films fall into. This shows the studio, director, writers, actors, and producers all had a lot of faith in this film. It’s for this reason that many film buffs predict that The Batman is shaping up to be something very special.
Either that…or they just think it will make them a lot of money; that’s always a bonus but making a good film should be the priority.
As for box office and critical predictions, there’s a chance this could be another billion-dollar hit for Warner Bros’ much in the same way 2019’s “Joker” was. And the critical response could prove just as gratifying for the studio.
Well that was a quick overview of the upcoming Batman film to be released in 2021, and why it could be one of the greatest superhero films of out time…
